What Counts As a Large Format Wall Tile
The trade treats anything with a side over 600 mm as large format, and anything past 1200 mm as a panel. Three specifications matter more than the label.
Body type. Porcelain and ceramic behave differently at scale. Porcelain classified BIa under BS EN 14411 absorbs 0.5 percent water or less, and that density is what allows a large format tile to be fired at panel dimensions without warping. Check the body type on the product page before specifying a panel format.
Rectified edges. Edges ground square after firing make every piece dimensionally identical, permitting 2 to 3 mm joints. Without rectification, cumulative size variance shows within a few rows.
Thickness. Standard wall tiles run 9 to 10 mm. Panels are often 6 mm to keep weight manageable, changing both handling and substrate loading.

Scale is what makes these work. Digital printing uses a finite number of face variations, typically six to sixty per range. At 300 x 600 mm the repeat becomes visible quickly. At 600 x 1200 mm and above it spreads across far fewer pieces, so it rarely registers.
That is the case for large format stone effect wall tiles and marble effect wall tiles: veining needs room to run before it reads as material rather than pattern, without the porosity, sealing or weight of quarried stone.

Fitting Large Format Wall Tiles
Large format looks better and fits harder. Most failures trace to the substrate, not the tile.

Flatness. BS 5385-1 governs internal wall tiling, with thin bed work commonly requiring the background flat within 3 mm over a 2 m straightedge. Deviation a 300 mm tile absorbs shows as lippage across 1200 mm.

Adhesive. Specify C2TE S1 or better under BS EN 12004: cementitious, improved, extended open time, slip resistant and deformable. Ready mixed pastes cannot carry these weights.

Coverage. Back butter the tile as well as notching the wall, and use levelling clips. Dab fixing leaves voids, and a void behind a panel is a fracture point.

Handling and loading. A 1200 x 2400 mm panel needs two people and a rail cutter rated for the thickness. Check the substrate carries the weight, particularly on plasterboard, where backer board is safer.
